When you choose a scented candle, you have probably come across terms like “essential oils”, “natural fragrance”, or simply “fragrance” on the label. These terms cover very different realities — in terms of composition, olfactory behaviour, and potential impact on your health and home. Here is what you need to know to read a label with discernment.
What is a natural fragrance?
A natural fragrance is extracted directly from a plant or animal raw material — flower, bark, resin, seed, leaf — through steam distillation, cold pressing, or solvent extraction. Essential oils are the best-known form. They contain hundreds of different aromatic molecules, which gives them a complexity and nuance that is difficult to replicate.
A 100% natural fragrance means all its aromatic molecules come from natural sources. This is rare, expensive, and subject to natural variability: the same rose essential oil can smell different depending on the harvest year, the region, or the climate. This is a characteristic, not a flaw — but it requires rigorous quality management.
What is a synthetic fragrance?
A synthetic fragrance is composed of aromatic molecules created in a laboratory. Some replicate molecules that exist in nature (known as “nature-identical” molecules), while others are entirely new, with no equivalent in the plant or animal world. Synthetic musks, laboratory vanillin, and marine molecules like Calone are examples of creations that do not exist in nature but are now ubiquitous in perfumery.
Synthetic fragrances offer stability, reproducibility, and a far broader olfactory palette than natural ones. They make it possible to create scents that cannot be extracted directly — lily of the valley, for example, cannot be steam-distilled into an essential oil: its fragrance is entirely reconstructed through chemical synthesis.
What “natural” claims actually mean
The term “natural” is not regulated in the same way in every country. In Europe, REACH regulations and IFRA standards govern the use of fragrance ingredients, whether natural or synthetic. But a candle labelled “natural fragrance” may contain a highly variable proportion of genuinely natural materials.
What matters more than origin is the quality and safety of the ingredients. Some natural molecules are strong allergens — eugenol from clove, linalool from lavender, cineole from eucalyptus — and are subject to regulatory restrictions. Conversely, many synthetic molecules are perfectly safe and very well tolerated.
What this means practically for a candle
In a candle, fragrance is heated and diffused into the air. The concentration of aromatic particles in the atmosphere is lower than what you inhale directly from a perfume on skin. The risks associated with fragrance ingredients in candles are therefore generally limited, provided you follow a few basic rules: good ventilation, reasonable burn duration, and verified ingredient quality.
People with asthma, pregnant women, and young children may be more sensitive to diffused fragrance — natural or synthetic alike. In these cases, favour lower concentrations and regular aeration.
How to choose
Rather than seeking out “100% natural” at all costs — a claim that is often more marketing than technical — prioritise transparency. A serious maker will tell you the composition of their wax, the nature of their fragrances, and their IFRA compliance. That information is what allows you to make an informed choice, independently of a natural or synthetic positioning.
