What we love to smell is not random: personal history, memories, mood on a given day, all of it counts. Research on scent preferences is still young, so a little caution is in order: no fragrance family "proves" a personality trait. But it makes a lovely mirror. Here is a playful look at each family, with a Little Flame candle to try for each one. All our fragrances come from Grasse, the world capital of perfume.
If you love fresh and citrus notes
Lemon, grapefruit, mint, clean linen. Some research links these bright notes to a taste for clarity and momentum. These tend to be people who like things tidy, in their space and in their head. Fragrance becomes a way of getting into the right frame of mind: you light it, and the day can begin.
If that is you, try our Brise Marine: lemon, bergamot and lightly salty marine notes, softened by white musk. It smells like a walk by the sea on a fresh morning.
If you love florals
Rose, jasmine, peony, lily of the valley: florals have a long history as fragrances of self-expression and attraction. People who prefer them often have a strong aesthetic sense, an eye for detail, and a tendency toward empathy. Some studies point to a link between liking soft florals and traits such as openness or social warmth, but these are tendencies, not rules.
Florals are also closely tied to emotional memory: a whiff of rose or lilac can take you straight back to a garden or a person. Our Rose Vanillée was inspired by a trip to Oman, in the souks of Muscat where rose hangs in the warm air. For a more timeless floral, Velours Doré pairs rose, jasmine and guaiac wood.
If you love woody and earthy notes
Sandalwood, cedar, vetiver, oakmoss: if these are your favourites, you may value stability and grounding. These fragrances evoke earth, forest, slow time. They are often associated with quiet self-assurance, the kind that has nothing to prove. It is the sort of scent you do not explain; you simply recognise it.
Our Santal Ambré follows this path: spices and bergamot on top, cedar, iris and vanilla at the heart, amber, black musk and sandalwood underneath. Close your eyes and picture a hushed lounge by the fire.
If you love gourmand and warm notes
Vanilla, tonka bean, caramel, cacao: gourmand fragrances are the scents of comfort and instant pleasure. People who choose them are often comfortable treating themselves without guilt. They are also tied to the idea of home, of an interior that should feel like a refuge.
Looking for comfort? Vanille Douce recalls childhood and simple moments. For the sweet-toothed, Choco Pistache smells like a pastry baking in grandma's kitchen: our most gourmand scent.
If you love orientals and spice
Oud, incense, pepper, cinnamon, cardamom: these notes often appeal to people who love mystery, travel and history. They are fragrances that tell a story, with real cultural depth.
For us, Pétales d'Oranger carries that journey: the energy of the Marrakech medina, spices at every corner, then suddenly a soft orange blossom drifting out of a pastry shop and inviting you in.
A preference, not a verdict
All of this is an invitation to reflect, not a diagnosis. Scent preferences shift with age, season and mood, and most people enjoy several families at once. Next time you choose a candle, notice what pulls you in: not the design, not the name, the scent itself.
